Date palm seed coffee, a high performance-enhancing beverage

 

Date seeds are generally discarded from supermarkets supply chains and commercial food manufacturers as food wastes. Technology has allowed valuable chemical compounds to be extracted efficiently from these materials, giving great opportunity for creating products of significant value through application of industrial biotechnology.

 

Studies have shown that date seeds possess high amount of phenolic acids and flavonoids, compounds known to have many beneficial effects, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial, antimutagenic, and anti-inflammatory activities, and the reduction of cardiovascular issue. Polyphenol content and antioxidant activity of date seeds have been cited to remarkably have up to 10-fold higher than its fruits and other popular dietary antioxidant-rich food products.

 

The purpose of this presentation is to project the potential of date seeds as a sustainable alternative to coffee for health-conscious consumers in incorporating functional foods and beverages in their routine diet. Plants based functional foods and beverages ensure the provision of an array of nutraceuticals for healthy living and disease prevention

 

This present innovation was developed in view of increasing general demands of functional foods that address precise health benefits. This has been stimulated by modern consumers, being more conscious of their health and diet status.

 

For a fact, date seeds contain high levels of phenolics, dietary fiber and antioxidants, the most effective ones being flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acid. It has proven from studies that flavonoids reduce the risk of diabetes. In nutraceutical and pharmaceutical products, date seeds have been used as an addition for antioxidants due to its high levels of antioxidants and volatile complexes

 

Advantages

 

The formulated finished product is 100% derived date seeds without any addition of any substance, preservative or chemical.  Health drink products available in the market contain other mixtures such as preservatives where nutrients are not fully available

 

Cost of production of date seed coffee is lower because the material used is 100% natural and extraction is done using water, whereas health drinks available in the market cost much higher due to many processing procedures

 

Formulation is prepared by simple procedures (heat treatment water extraction) and estimated cost for laboratory scale is low compared to health drinks available in the market)

 

Date palm seed coffee is a high performance-enhancing beverage made up of date seeds ground to an optimum fine powder, readily dissolves in water

.

Formulated by optimum heat treatment and extraction procedures give date seed coffee a pleasant taste comparable with other well-known coffees in the market
