UPMIP - UPM Intellectual Property System
Research output of UPM will be granted for intellectual property protection to give exclusive right to UPM and the researcher or inventor. IPR acts and is only being protected in the requested country only. The requested protection can be made at the Intellectual Property Division, Putra Science Park as follows;

Patent (Akta Paten 1983 and Peraturan Paten 1986, 20 years)• Research output that can be protected under the patent law consist of process or new product or improvement that can solve technical problems. • To qualify for a research output to be protected, three criteria must be fulfilled - New, involves invention steps and can be applied in the industry. • A patent is protected for 20 years from the date of filing and a utility innovation is protected 10 + 5 + 5 years from the date of filing subject to use. |

Copyright © (Akta Hakcipta 1987)• Research output that can be protected under copyright comprise all literary work such as books, lecture notes, computer programmes, software, multimedia; artistic work such as paintings, photographs, building structures, sculptures; musical composition; sound recording; films; broadcasting and publication work. • Statutory Declaration can also be done to prove ownership towards a copyright. • Copyright shall continue to subsist until the expiry of a period of 50 years computed from the beginning of the next calendar year following the year in which the work was first published. • Copyright in any literal, musical or artistic work shall subsist during the life of the author and continue to subsist until the expiry of a period of 50 years after his death. |

Trade Mark ™ / ® (Akta Cap Dagangan 1976)• Trade mark is a mark used to represent a product or to distinguish the products and services of one seller from another. • Trade mark includes sign, label, name, signature, word, alphabet or combination of all of these. • Trade mark registration is valid for 10 years from the date of application and may be renewed every 5 years |

Industrial Design (ID)• Industrial design is the overall exterior features of an item or product and concentrates at the ornamental or aesthetic aspects of a product. - Form, configuration, pattern and ornament; - Interesting and appeal to the eyes; - Does not involve product building methods or principles; - Does not involve product functions; - Does not depend on the appearance of other products. • New and never been disclosed to the public in Malaysia. • A registered industrial design is given an initial protection period of 5 years from the date of filing and is renewable for a further two consecutive terms of 5 years each. |

Trade secrets and know-how• Any technical or commercial information that is not disclosed to the public except to certain people in the organisation. • No registration is required for this type of protection and protection of the secret information depends on for how long the information will be left unknown or not disclosed to the public. |

UPM Inno endeavours to utilise fully the research facilities, technologies, new products, IPs which are available in UPM for conversion into business activities profitable to the university through establishment of joint ventures and smart partnerships with related industries. UPM Inno assist in shaping UPM’s R&D cooperation with industries.This is one of the efforts undertaken by the university through UPM Inno to speed up product and innovation development.
The Intellectual Property Division (BHI), PSP will manage alienation (transfer) of UPM technologies to UPMInno for commercialisation purpose.
